A computer
forensic investigation has an initial goal of making an exact duplicate
of the data drive to guarantee that the data is not
manipulated in any way, by the examination or by the examiner.
Data retrieval and interpretation, using only the latest and best
computer forensic tools, is attempted only
after the data integrity is assured, and only upon the copy of the data
drive, never upon the original drive itself. Computer forensic
investigations may be called electronic evidence
discovery, digital data discovery, or electronic discovery, by
prosecuting attorneys. Police investigators may call it computer
examination or computer analysis. Other terms for computer forensic
investigations could be simply Computer forensics, computer forensic
analysis, computer evidence discovery, or even forensic data discovery.
Whichever term is used, the high standards and
requirements dictated by the rules of evidence always pertains.
